There are many activities and sights to see in this small country. El Salvador is about the size of Massachusetts, so getting around is easy. The capital, San Salvador hosts many top hotels with all the amenities you are used to. The city has four modern malls that surpass many of our own. They are beautifully designed for a great shopping and dining experience. There are museums, monuments, galleries, parks, and activities for children. Nightlife? The "Zona Rosa" is the most popular district for restaurants, bars, and live music.
Outside of the capital, head for the coast to one of the resorts or intimate seaside inns. The beaches are wide and shallow with warm Pacific waters. El Salvador is known for its legendary surfing and there are several hotels that have surf packages for the pro or novice. Diving, deep-sea fishing, and ocean kayaking are also popular.
El Salvador is the land of volcanoes and there are several scenic routes that wind their way through the mountains. The temperatures are cooler and the landscape is breathtaking with cloud forests, crater lakes, and of course, coffee plantations. Along the way, stop at Mayan ruins, and small villages for artisan handicrafts.
The conflicts of the past ( which ended 15 years ago) have evolved into a commitment for peace. El Salvador has worked hard to bring about a stable political and economic environment. The country has strong ties with the United States, and American and foreign companies are establishing a presence here at an increasing rate every year. In 2001, the country converted to the US dollar.
Aside from a great vacation, what most tourists take away with them is how warm and hospitable the people are. Salvadorans have a great love for their country and will to go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one. So in the land of sleepy volcanoes, come and discover this hidden gem in Central America.

I first visited El Salvador in February 2004 (found a great airfare on Taca for $300.00, thank you very much!) and discovered my mother's country. I always felt disconnected from my roots until this amazing trip. I met family I never knew, was treated by strangers as if I was family and ate my way through this beautiful, tropical country. I miss the pupusas, the platanos and the delicious seafood. The beaches and volcanos were breathtaking and the El Salvadoran culture is still intact. I returned this past fall with my gringo husband and got the chance to re-experience this enchanting country through my husband's eyes. Wonderful country, can't wait to go back again!
